bliss balls

Now I can try and refrain from singing “Chocolate Salty Balls” while making these, but I tell you, it’s not easy.

I guarantee, with 100% certainty, that when my partner wakes from his epic Saturday sleep-in – that he will take one look at what I’m making and start bellowing it out with glee. Which will then no doubt turn into hyper lounge-room dance-offs with our little man Jules as we start merging the song into remixes.

We are giant kids here at Casa Del ABK. Possibly not fit to parent really, being toddlers ourselves and all. What can I say? We like GOOD TIMES (now I totally have the hankering to watch Raw.)

We also like good eats.

And this one is super good AND healthy, and is just the ticket for demolishing those chocolate cravings in the arvo. Even if you go back for seconds, you shan’t feel any guilt, they are only 65 calories each!

Brew yourself a scrumptious cup of coffee or tea before smashing these bliss balls, it is the PERFECT partner for these – they are teeth-coatingly  good.

Raw Cacao Bliss Balls (not at all salty) – Makes 22

1 cup raw almonds
1 cup pitted dates
1 tbsp black chia seeds (replace with 1 tbsp of sunflower seeds if you dislike the crunch of chia)
1 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp desiccated coconut, plus a few extra tbsp for coating at the end
2 tbsp raw cacao powder – available from good health food stores, I use Navitas Naturals Cacao but Loving Earth Cacao is also awesome

For the non-vegans, a lil’ squeeze of honey (gives them a “Summer Roll” kinda flavour)
a dash of vanilla extract/vanilla bean paste/pure vanilla powder – I use a pinch of this pure vanilla powder

Place the almonds into a food processor, close, then turn on the highest setting for total obliteration. Do this for around 30 seconds or until your almonds are well and truly crumb dust. I used my Thermomix to whiz them – speed 9 for 20 seconds. This part can be noisy, but only for a short while. NOTE: If you decided to sub the chia seeds with the sunflower seeds, add them in with the almonds here. If you decided to go with the chia seeds, don’t worry about adding them here, leave them out for Step 2.
Throw all remaining ingredients into the processor with the almonds (except for the extra rolling coconut) and blitz again on high until combined. HOT TIP: Don’t throw your tablespoon used for the coconut oil addition straight in the sink – scoop out any remaining oil residue with your fingers and apply to your lips, it is INCREDIBLE as a lip treatment. Even rub it through any dry ends of your hair!
Roll a generous two teaspoonfuls of the mixture in your hands, give them a spin around in the extra desiccated coconut and VOILÀ!
Set in fridge for at least 20 mins before hoeing in.

These babies will keep in an air-tight container in the fridge for around a week. But you know they won’t get that far! Heyoooo.

Next weekend I plan to bring you something hearty, savoury and oh-so-suitable for our now fresh & brisk Autumnal weather. This sweet tooth will start shifting and driving off into variety-town from now on, so get your bellies ready!

Hope you enjoy this rich, yummy treat – which is not only UBER fast to put together, but healthy as well. Better for you than a Snickers, that’s for sure!
